Meryl Streep reveals why she was “miserable” making her iconic movie

Oscar-winning actress Meryl Streep has revealed the difficult time she had onset of one of her most well-known films.

Streep perfectly incapsulated The Devil Wears Prada character, Miranda Priestly, who was the editor-in-chief of a high fashion magazine and the blueprint for a boss from hell

It has been 15 years since the world first got to see Streep in a new, brilliantly-played light, and now she and her co-stars have revealed what it was like working on the film.

Streep is now 71, and boldly revealed that she employed method acting while filming.

She often chose to retain elements of her icy, mean-spirited character, even off-set.

It became an often occurrence that she would brush off her co-stars Emily Blunt and Anne Hathaway.

“Meryl is so gregarious and fun as hell, in some ways it wasn’t the most fun for her having to remove herself,” Blunt told the publication.

“It wasn’t like she was unapproachable; You could go up to her and say, ‘Oh my God, the funniest thing just happened,’ and she’d listen, but I don’t know if it was the most fun for her to be on set being that way.”

Streep said filming the movie “was horrible!

“I was [miserable] in my trailer. I could hear them all rocking and laughing. I was so depressed! I said, ‘Well, it’s the price you pay for being boss!’”

She went on to say: “That’s the last time I ever attempted a Method thing!”

Streep’s performance earned her a host of high-profile awards including a Golden Globe and a nomination for an Oscar.

The star has since been nominated for the industry’s highest honour seven more times.

Hathaway agreed with Blunt that Steep put up an unnatural wall during film, but admitted it helped.

“I did feel intimidated, but I always felt cared for,” she explained.

“I knew that whatever she was doing to create that fear, I appreciated [because] I also knew she was watching out for me.”

Streep’s character has drawn comparisons to Vogue editor Anna Wintour who has had to knock down several rumours that she is an unkind boss.

“I wasn’t interested in doing a biopic on Anna; I was interested in her position in her company. I wanted to take on the burdens she had to carry, along with having to look nice every day,” Streep said.

The A-lister also spoke on the movie’s worldwide appeal, despite being marketed toward women as counter-programming for Superman Returns.

“Because they’d given us such straitened circumstances to make the film with a smaller budget, this opened up and said that a ‘chick flick’ can be a huge hit with a broad audience,” she said.

“This is the first movie [where] men have come up to me and said, ‘I know how you felt; I have a company, and nobody understands me. It’s really hard.’

It’s the hardest thing in the world for a man to feel his way through to the protagonist of the film if it’s a woman.”

The 5 best Meryl Streep movies

Thanks to a dazzling succession of films, Meryl Streep’s name has become synonymous with elegance, raw emotional depth and amazing performances. To celebrate the release of her latest film, Ricki and the Flash, we have revisited 5 of her best movies.

1. Kramer vs. Kramer (1979)

The first of Meryl Streep's three Academy Awards came in this classic family drama, co-starring Dustin Hoffman. This simple and affecting story about heartache and separation and constituted an iconic and groundbreaking study of the modern family unit. At the time the film boldly challenged stereotypes about parenthood and the role of women in domestic life.

2. Sophie’s Choice (1982)

In this acclaimed film, Meryl Streep shines as Sophie, a Polish immigrant with a haunting tale. Through the use of flashbacks, viewers are taken on a tear-inducing voyage through war-torn Europe. Sophie is a survivor of the holocaust and tells a young writer about her struggle with the most difficult situation a mother could face. Streep won her second Oscar with this tender portrayal (her first for Best Actress).

3. Silkwood (1983)

Taking on the unglamorous role of Karen Silkwood who works at a plutonium processing plant, with her boyfriend Drew (Kurt Russell) and flatmate Dolly (Cher). Streep brings an impressive and gritty performance which stands the test of time. Karen is determined to prove there is something very, very wrong going on at the plant and is prepared to put her life in danger to expose it. Directed by Mike Nichols and written by Nora Ephron and based on a true story. It is a must watch!

4. The Bridges of Madison County (1995)

Clint Eastwood's emotionally charged drama was a smash-hit and is still a heart-warming yet tear-jerker love story for the ages. The film centres on a four-day love affair between a photographer (Eastwood) and a former Italian war bride (Streep). As their romantic interlude unfolds, the pair is struck by the gravity of their impending choices and the everyday burdens of their lives. Poignant and romantic.

5. Adaptation (2002)

In this more experimental film, Adaptation saw Streep collaborating with Charlie Kaufman. The result is a sensational film jam-packed with meta-plot-twists and eccentrically engaging performances (Nicolas Cage, in a dual role as pair of screenwriter twins). Taking on the role of Susan Orlean, author of The Orchid Thief, Streep lights up the screen with her sensual, Oscar-nominated performance.

Republished with permission of Wyza.

Talk show host Jimmy Kimmel welcomed Meryl Streep to his show this month, to promote her latest film The Post where she co-stars with Tom Hanks.

In typical talk show fashion, Kimmel put the actress on the spot as he proposed to quiz her on her record-holding 20 Oscar nominations.

Streep thought he was kidding until he started the clock and asked her to name as many of the 20 films as she could in 60 seconds, in order to win a “bonus Oscar”.

She got off to a slow start, recalling The French Lieutenant’s Woman, Kramer vs Kramer, Silkwood and Sophie’s Choice before laughing and admitting, ‘See, I can’t remember last Thursday, I can remember the olden days.’”

Streep then shouted “Out of Africa!” before her next guess, “A Cry In The Dark, maybe?” which was met with a “No!” from Kimmel.

Streep did in fact receive a nomination for the infamous Azaria Chamberlain film, however it seems that Kimmel’s researchers must have gone off a list using the Australian film’s title Evil Angels.

Better get your facts straight Jimmy if you’re going to be hosting the Academy Awards this year! Meryl Streep addresses claims Dustin Hoffman ‘groped’ her when they first met

An old interview where Academy Award-winning actress Meryl Streep claimed Dustin Hoffman groped her has resurfaced.

The 1979 interview with Time Magazine has resurfaced following the recent sexual harassment allegations against Hoffman.

In the interview, Streep recounts the first time she met her Kramer vs. Kramer co-star.

“He came up to me and said, ‘I’m Dustin — burp — Hoffman,’ and he put his hand on my breast,” Streep said.

“What an obnoxious pig, I thought.”

However, Streep’s representative told E! News that the article was “not an accurate rendering of that meeting”.

“There was an offence and it is something for which Dustin apologised. And Meryl accepted that,” said Streep’s representative.

It is uncertain whether Hoffman ever commented on that encounter.

In Streep’s biography Her Again: Becoming Meryl Streep other interactions with Hoffman were discussed.

Streep said Hoffman slapped her across the face before filming an emotional scene from Kramer vs. Kramer. She also said that Hoffman taunted her about her former boyfriend John Cazale, who died of lung cancer while she was dating him.

Recently, two women have accused Hoffman of sexual harassment.

Last week, Anna Graham Hunter alleged Hoffman groped her on the set of the 1985 movie Death of a Salesman and “talked about sex to me and in front of me.”

Hunter was 17 years old when the alleged incident took place.

Playwright Wendy Riss Gatsiounis claimed Hoffman asked her if she had ever slept with a man over the age of 40.

He also allegedly asked her to accompany him to a store to try on clothing and when she declined, he refused to adapt her play into a movie.

Hoffman apologised after Hunter spoke out saying “it is not reflective of who I am”.
